In the Midst of the Inferno

2018. 9 minute full dome projection
In the Midst of the Inferno is an immersive media experience commissioned by Arlington Arts, a community organization whose mission is to support and promote the arts in Arlington, Virginia. Called “one of the best and most innovative projects in the region.” by Washington City Paper, this series asks artists to create an original full-dome projection experience for the David M. Brown Planetarium. Multiple screenings took place from April 20 through April 22, 2018, where hundreds of people experienced the work. Created using advanced 3D computer animation techniques, the format presented a unique challenge in creating a computer animation in a 360 degree dome format. The work takes viewers on a surreal journey through environments evoking science fiction and luxury apartments. In the animation, the viewer encounters surveillance cameras and security checkpoints eliciting subconscious fears surrounding authority and wealth, The work is a critical reflection on the digital age as viewers experience a world that is absurd and dystopian, yet eerily familiar.
